10 everyday classic cars and their original colours

It’s true that some classic car enthusiasts go for the Porsche, the Aston Martin and the Jaguar. However, there are a lot of family cars and everyday motors that have retained their popularity over the decades. Here are a few of our favourites and a look at the original colours they sported back then - and, thanks to original colour-matched car paint, now.

1. Triumph Stag

This 1970s 2+2 sports car remains a popular marque among car enthusiasts, especially in the UK. While it’s remembered for being style over substance, with engine issues that were never fully resolved, around 6,000 are still registered in this country.

Classic Triumph Stag colours

The Triumph Stag was sold between 1970 and 1978 and came in a wide range of colours, including several browns, greys, blues and reds.

Colours include:

  • Russet
  • New White
  • Conifer Racing Green
  • Wedgewood Blue
  • Signal Red
  • Jasmine Yellow/Beige

2. MGB

The sporty MGB was sold between 1962 and 1980. It’s a stylish two-door, four-cylinder, soft-top classic car that was among the first to be designed with a crumple zone so was, in its time, innovative and safe. While engineering has come a long way since then, it remains a firm favourite among car enthusiasts.

Classic MG B colours

The classic MGB was available in different models, including the Roadster and the GT, and a full spectrum of colours including:

  • MG Black
  • Tahiti Blue

3. Morris Minor

Post-WW2 motorists took well to this family car. Produced as a 4 seat saloon, a 2-door and a convertible Tourer, the original MM series was sold between 1948 and 1953 with later models sold until 1972.

A rival to the VW Beetle (below), the Morris Minor eventually conceded defeat, but not before it had clocked up many fans of its style, versatility and economy.

4. VW Beetle

The original Volkswagen Type 1 or ‘Beetle’ was manufactured between 1938 and 2003, making it the longest-running classic car in continuous production. It was succeeded by a new Beetle in 2001.

Designed by Ferdinand Porsche, founder of another car company you might have heard of, to specifications from Adolf Hitler, the ‘Bug’ shrugged off its Nazi connections after WW2 to become a much loved car worldwide.

Despite its redesign (it’s been renowned by BMW since 2000), the original classic Minis remain popular with car enthusiasts and Mini fans alike.

However, in 1983, 1988 and 1989 it was the UK’s second best-selling car. In 1992, the year before it retired, it was still the fifth best-selling car in the UK and has retained a die-hard fan-base since then.

Many special, limited editions models were created. One was the rare 900 Lux, which had a Toppola camper shell and two-tone paint (slate blue metallic with silver below). Another was the 900 Ruby, which was only on sale in the UK. The Ruby had colour-coded bumpers and grey alloy wheels.
