How to Use PaintNuts Car Touch-Up Paint

PaintNuts touch-up paint is designed to be straightforward to use, even if you've never done it before. Most repairs, chips, scratches and scuffs, can be completed at home in under an hour.

What you can repair

  • Stone chips

  • Scratches and fine scuffs

  • Light scrapes and grazes

  • General road wear

Step-by-step application

  1. Clean the area thoroughly. Remove any dirt, wax or debris before you start.

  2. For deeper chips or scratches showing bare metal, apply primer first and treat any rust before painting.

  3. Apply the paint in thin coats using the pen tip or brush. Let each coat dry for around 25 minutes before applying the next.

  4. Once the final colour coat is dry (leave at least 24 hours), apply a lacquer coat for gloss and protection.

  5. Polish the area to blend the repair into the surrounding paintwork. The PaintNuts Scratch and Scuff Remover works well here. Skip this step for matte finishes.

Full step-by-step instructions are included with every kit. For more detail, visit our how-to guides or check the FAQ page if you have a specific question.

FAQ: PaintNuts vs bodyshop  -  which is better value?

For minor car paint damage, chips, scratches and scuffs, PaintNuts is considerably better value. A bodyshop typically charges £60 to £210 for a small scratch repair and up to £1,200 or more for a full panel respray. PaintNuts touch-up pens start from £13.99. A complete aerosol kit with primer, paint, and lacquer is £40 to £50.

The bodyshop will always produce the most flawless result, but for everyday cosmetic repairs it's rarely worth the cost. PaintNuts gives you a custom-matched colour, professionally formulated paint, and results that genuinely blend in, for a fraction of the price.

Volkswagen Passat over the years

A car with plentiful heritage, the Volkswagen Passat has been with us since 1973. Even in the 1970s, the first generation Passat had the unmistakable sloping rear end characterising the model. With that aside, the overall shape wasn’t far off the classic BMW 5 series with its long and rectangular design. Whilst the Volkswagen Passat's interior was minimalist, offering buyers little to no optionality, it was a different story for the paint colours, which included Marina Blue, Senegal Red and Alaska White.

The Passat's second and third generations were much of the same exterior-wise. That said, the second generation Passat was slightly larger than the first. It also had a much-improved interior. Paint colours for these Passat generations included Tornado Red, Saphir Blue, Satin Silver and Pearl Grey

Come the 1990s, the VW Passat generations released in this decade were notability 90s in exterior styling. The longitudinally-mounted engine was seen for the first time and only on the Passat. Paint colours for the Passat in the 1990s included Brilliant Black, Green Mica, Galactic Blue and Candy White.

After the millennium, there was more change to the Volkswagen Passat Generations. Updates included VR6 and W8 engines, and a change to the interior that focused more on luxury than previously. There was an update to the colour palette too, with Volkswagen Passat paint colours on offer including Black Magic Pearl, Moorland Green, Opera Red and Glacier Blue.

Currently in 2024, we are on the 8th generation of the Volkswagen Passat. Although retaining some familiar aspects from the previous model like the 2.0L turbo-four engine, this generation has seen a bigger transformation than other models before it, with even Volkswagen calling it ‘the new Passat’. When purchasing, motorists have the option of several Volkswagen Passat paint colours including Chilli Red, Mariposit Green, Reef Blue and Diabase Grey.
