How to Use PaintNuts Car Touch-Up Paint

PaintNuts touch-up paint is designed to be straightforward to use, even if you've never done it before. Most repairs, chips, scratches and scuffs, can be completed at home in under an hour.

What you can repair

  • Stone chips

  • Scratches and fine scuffs

  • Light scrapes and grazes

  • General road wear

Step-by-step application

  1. Clean the area thoroughly. Remove any dirt, wax or debris before you start.

  2. For deeper chips or scratches showing bare metal, apply primer first and treat any rust before painting.

  3. Apply the paint in thin coats using the pen tip or brush. Let each coat dry for around 25 minutes before applying the next.

  4. Once the final colour coat is dry (leave at least 24 hours), apply a lacquer coat for gloss and protection.

  5. Polish the area to blend the repair into the surrounding paintwork. The PaintNuts Scratch and Scuff Remover works well here. Skip this step for matte finishes.

Full step-by-step instructions are included with every kit. For more detail, visit our how-to guides or check the FAQ page if you have a specific question.

FAQ: PaintNuts vs bodyshop  -  which is better value?

For minor car paint damage, chips, scratches and scuffs, PaintNuts is considerably better value. A bodyshop typically charges £60 to £210 for a small scratch repair and up to £1,200 or more for a full panel respray. PaintNuts touch-up pens start from £13.99. A complete aerosol kit with primer, paint, and lacquer is £40 to £50.

The bodyshop will always produce the most flawless result, but for everyday cosmetic repairs it's rarely worth the cost. PaintNuts gives you a custom-matched colour, professionally formulated paint, and results that genuinely blend in, for a fraction of the price.

Land Rover paint code location

Finding the car paint code location for your Land Rover is straightforward. The paint code is usually printed on a sticker or metal plate, which you can find in a few common areas of the vehicle. Once located, the paint code will typically appear as a mix of letters and numbers (for example: LRC820 or 820).

On a metal plate or sticker located on the door jamb / frame.

How to use Land Rover touch-up paint? (FAQ)

Land Rover touch-up paint is simple and easy to use regardless of whether you use it as a touch-up paint pen, bottle and brush, or car spray paint. Follow the guidance below for the correct use of each.

Do paint pens work on a Land Rover?

To make sure our colour-matched touch up car paint works on your Land Rover, we use 1k paint as opposed to the traditional 2k non air-dried paints. Even better, all the colour-matched car paint used in our touch-up paint pens is MPEX professional-grade, high-quality premium car paint, which has been extensively tested. This means our touch up paint has been formulated to resist fading, chipping, flaking and achieves excellent results for your Land Rover.

How do you use a paint pen to fix a car scratch on a Land Rover?

For a quick guide on how to use our paint pens on Land Rovers, follow the advice below:

  1. Shake the pen for at least 60 seconds to mix the paint.
  2. Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free of wax, polish, and dust.
  3. Apply thin, light coats with smooth strokes. For needlepoint pens, gently squeeze the paint into the scratch or chip.
  4. Let the paint dry for 10-25 minutes before applying a second coat if it needs it.
  5. Allow the paint to cure for 24 hours before using a polishing compound like our Scratch & Scuff Remover to blend the repair.

Do I need to use a primer and lacquer for my Land Rover?

A primer is only required for your Land Rover if your chip or scratch goes down to the metal and if any rust is present. A lacquer is recommended in most instances – especially with metallic paints. It should be applied 24 hours after the coloured coat and will give a perfect finish for your Land Rover.

Can I spray over old Land Rover car paint?

You can spray over old Land Rover paint, provided the paint is in good condition (devoid of rust, flaking and corrosion). PaintNuts aerosol car paint has been specifically formulated to work on your car, old or new.

To order your PaintNuts car paint aerosol, simply enter the registration number or enter the paint code if you know it. Then, select the PaintNuts touch-up aerosol, and we’ll custom-mix the exact paint colour.
