A celebration of sweet, evocative and wacky car paint names

Some car manufacturers appear to take creative pride in naming their paint colours. Browse through the car paint catalogues of most brands and you’ll find beautiful locations, precious stones, precious metals, planets and stars.

How many people buy a car because the name of the paint captures their imagination? Not many. Certainly, if you’ve bought a secondhand motor, you’ll only learn the name of the paint when it comes to fixing chips, scratches or scuffs on the paintwork with touch up paint.

But car paint names do reflect the personality of the brand and also the diverse personalities of their owners.

We took the Top 10 best selling car brands and took a completely subjective look at the creativity of the names of their paint.

Modern car paint names

Volkswagen

Number 1 best-selling car manufacturer in the UK

Each VW paint colour one reflects a mood. At one end of the scale we have the drama of Phantom Black Metallic and Phoenix Blue. Wild Cherry Metallic might evoke daydreams of bunking off college to spend a day by the sea with your besties.

On the other hand, Phat Red rubs panels with upmarket Windsor Blue and York Blue Pearl. If you’re more of a Windsor or York person, let us tell you that ‘phat’ is urban slang for ‘excellent’.

The global market means that sometimes we get an exotic paint name that we can’t quite understand - in this case, our favourite Zenderngreen Metallic, which means ‘crushed green metallic’.

VW lists more than 150 shades of black car paint in its catalogue, including Vulkan Black Pearl (volcano), Black Violet Pearl Metallic, and Tief Black (‘deep’ black) and Tarantella Black (tarantella is a folk dance with tamborines).

Audi

Number 2 best-selling car manufacturer in the UK

Audi shares car paint names with its sister VW and gives us Snap Orange, Cashmere Pearl, Alabaster Grey and Avalon Green Metallic. It also gives us some German words for our lexicon - Wolken Grey sounds more moody than ‘cloud grey’.

The VAG (Volkswagen Group) paint catalogue also includes the very practical Brown Metallic and Brilliant Red

Like its sister marque VW, Audi has more than 150 shades of black car touch up paint, so we won’t go over these again.

Instead, it has an astonishing range of shades of white - in fact, it has more than 70 shades of white in its catalogue, including Wolken White, Mint White Metallic, and Candy White.

BMW

Number 3 best-selling car manufacturer in the UK

BMW has an inventive selection of car paint names, many of which wouldn’t look out of place in a sci-fi, fantasy or dystopian video game. Paint names like Acid Green, Blue Lord, Saturn Blue and Mystic Red

We’ve also got the more evocative Blue Ridge Mountains, Hellgrey Metallic and Frozen Sunburst Gold Metallic. Our favourite might just be Dunkel Green; dunkel is a German word for ‘dark’ and, according to Wikipedia, is often used in relation to beer.

Ford

Number 4 best-selling car manufacturer in the UK

Our search hit upon a list of very sensible paint colour names like Dark True Blue, Deep Orange and Dark Maroon

Ford paint colours - like all marques - also have a selection of paints named after places - like Dark Highland Green Metallic, Deauville Blue Metallic, and Windsor Grey Metallic.

There are a few though where Ford’s marketing department has worked a bit harder, like Deep Impact Blue Metallic and Passion Red Mica Metallic

Our favourite Ford name has to be Vignale Ametallicista Scura Metallic - we think it’s a mix of Italian and Spanish and, even though we don’t know what it means, it sounds fascinating.

Toyota

Number 5 best-selling car manufacturer in the UK

Considering that Toyota has more than 40 different shades of beige in its catalogue (including Beige 464, Beige 4A8 and Beige 5472), it balances this out with interesting names for lovelier hues.

Take Abyss Blue Mica, for example, or Wild Mullberry and Stillwater. While Air Yellow brings up images of air pollution, Alpine White provides a fresh balance.

Our favourites were Agate Spectra Shine Metallic and Blazing Carnelian Contrast, because they sound fun and optimistic!
