Released at the tail-end of World War Two in 1945, the Volkswagen Beetle originally had a split rear window as opposed to an oval or square one as we’re used to seeing. The original 1945 Beetle was simplistic but functional in its design and had a small 4-cylinder air-cooled engine.
The specific paint colour names for the early Beetles are not known, however, the colours were varied for the time, with the Beetle coming in green, blue and red paint colours as well as usual black, white and grey colours, among others.
Although there were some minor changes to the Beetle over time, it wasn’t until the third generation, released in 1958, that significant changes were made. A redesigned bumper on both ends, flatter windscreen and a more powerful engine that now produced 36bhp - 30hbp more than the original Beetle.
As generations came and went, come the 1980s, Volkswagen continued to offer a wide colour pallet to motorists. Some of these shades included a brilliantly striking Mars Red, a crisp Alpine White, a bright Brilliant Orange and an earthy Agate Brown, to name some of them.
Come the sixth generation of the Volkswagen Beetle, which was released in 1998, it was a nod to what was originally conceived in 1945, with it now displaying a modern, rounded design. Aimed at a new generation of Beetle enthusiasts, VW released a range of new paint colours along with it. A bold Jazz Blue Pearl, a pale and bubbly Sunflower Yellow, as well as an indulgent Tornado Red - these were just some of the Volkswagen paint colours on offer to buyers.
Sadly, the Volkswagen Beetle was discontinued in 2019. Leaving behind a legacy and a plethora of paint colours in its rearview mirror, it undoubtedly will be missed by us all.
