The PaintNuts classic touch-up paint pen is ideal for tackling minor scratches and small chips on your cherished classic vehicle. Below is our recommended step-by-step guide to help you apply touch-up paint with confidence and care.
For deeper scratches or exposed metal/plastic, we recommend applying PaintNuts Primer first. If rust is visible, use our Rust Converter to treat the area before painting.
How to use the PaintNuts Classic Car Paint Pen
- Mix and check
- Prepare the area
- Apply the products
- Mixing - Shake pen thoroughly for at least 1 minute to ensure the primer is mixed correctly.
- Preparation - The surface must be clean and dry - make sure all wax, polish and dust is removed. If rust is present we suggest a rust treatment as well.
- Application - Using either pen or brush apply thin, light coats in smooth strokes. If you’re using the needle point pen let the nib sit inside the scratch or chip and squeeze gently applying the primer only to the damaged area. Let the primer dry for up to 30 minutes before applying further coats. If no further coat is needed, allow it to cure for 1 full hour before applying your colour-matched paint.
- Mixing & Colour Check - Shake the paint pen for at least 3 minutes to ensure the paint is fully mixed. If your colour is metallic, the paint may separate in the pen– a vigorous shake is essential. Test the colour in a discreet area and allow it to dry for 10 minutes. Note that paint can appear different when wet, inside the pen, or if applied incorrectly.
- Preparation - The surface must be clean and dry - make sure all wax, polish and dust is removed.
- Application - Using either the metal nib/pen or brush apply thin, light coats in smooth strokes. If using the needle-point pen, place the nib inside the scratch or chip and squeeze gently, applying paint only to the damaged area. Do not apply new paint on top of semi-dried paint, as this can cause a mismatched finish. Allow the colour-matched paint to dry for up to 30 minutes before applying another coat. If no further coat is needed, allow it to cure for one full hour before applying the clear lacquer.
- Mixing - Shake the pen thoroughly for at least 1 minute to ensure the lacquer is properly mixed.
- Preparation - The surface must be clean and dry - make sure all wax, polish and dust is removed.
- Application - Using either the pen or brush, apply thin, light coats in smooth strokes. If using the needle-point pen, place the nib inside the scratch or chip and squeeze gently, applying lacquer only within the damaged area. Leave the lacquer to dry for up to 30 minutes before applying a second coat if required. If no further coat is needed, allow the lacquer to cure for 4 hours before using any buffing or polishing compound.
