PaintNuts Primer Touch Up Pen
This precision primer touch-up pen is developed to be used as the base coat for our colour matched paints. The ultra-fine needle point pen is ideal for fine detailed work including scratches, scuffs, and stone chips.
The touch up primer also comes with a super fine detailing brush on the inside of the paint below the pen.
The anti-corrosive primer is recommended to help with adhesion for the paint as well as bringing the damage back to that of the level of the original paint work.

Directions for use
STEP ONE - PaintNuts Rust Converter 2 in 1 Pen
- Clean surface by removing all loose paint, rust, dirt, grease and salt.
- Rinse with clean water and allow time to dry.
- Shake the pen for 1 minute ensuring the converter is mixed.
- By brush apply direct to rusty area, working well into heavily pitted areas, corners and edges.
- By needle point pen allow the nib to sit in the stone chip and gentle squeeze the pen allowing the converter to flow in to the chip.
- Avoid coating onto painted areas, remove any excess with a clean cloth.
- The rust converter will turn blue/black when reacting with rust, normally within 15 minutes, if it does not change colour in 1 hour re-apply.
- PaintNuts primer can be applied after 2 hours.

- Mixing - Shake pen thoroughly for at least 1 minute to ensure the primer is mixed correctly.
- Preparation - The surface must be clean and dry - make sure all wax, polish and dust is removed. If rust is present we suggest a rust treatment using PaintNuts Rust Converter 2 in 1 pen.
- Application - Using either pen or brush apply thin, light coats in smooth strokes; if you’re using the needle point pen allow the nib to sit inside the scratch or chip and squeeze gently ensuring you only apply the primer within the damaged area. Leave the primer to dry for upto 30 minutes before applying any further coats, if no further coat is required, then leave to cure for 1 full hour before applying the PaintNuts Colour Matched Touch Up Pen.
STEP THREE - PaintNuts Colour Matched Touch Up Pen
- Mixing & Colour Check - Shake the Paint Pen for at least 3 Minutes to ensure the paint is thoroughly mixed correctly (if your paint is a Metallic Paint, you may notice the paint has separated within the bottle, this paint will need a vigourous shake, then test in a discreet area to check the colour match leaving the paint to dry for 10 minutes – paints will often appear different in colour inside the bottle, when wet or if applied incorrectly.
- Preparation - The surface must be clean and dry - make sure all wax, polish and dust is removed.
- Application - Using either the metal nib/pen or brush apply thin, light coats in smooth strokes; if you’re using the needle point pen allow the nib to sit inside the scratch or chip and squeeze gently ensuring you only apply the paint within the damaged area. Do Not apply new paint on top of existing paint as this will leave the area of repair looking lighter or darker. Leave the colour matched paint to dry for upto 30 mins before applying any further coats, if no further coat is required, then leave to cure for 1 full hour before applying the PaintNuts Clear Lacquer.

- Mixing - Shake pen thoroughly for at least 1 minute to ensure the lacquer is mixed correctly.
- Preparation - The surface must be clean and dry - make sure all wax, polish and dust is removed.
- Application - Using either pen or brush apply thin, light coats in smooth strokes; if you’re using the needle point pen allow the nib to sit in the scratch or chip and squeeze gently ensuring you only apply the lacquer witin the damaged area. Leave the lacquer to dry for upto 30 minutes before applying a second coat if required, if no further coat is required, you must leave the lacquer to cure for 4 hours before you use any buffing or polishing solution/compound.

How to use the PaintNuts Touch Up Pen

- Surface prep - Start by cleaning the damaged area. Remove any loose paint, rust, dirt, grease, or salt. Rinse with clean water and allow the surface to dry completely.
- Shake to activate - Shake the pen for at least one minute to mix the converter thoroughly.
- Application - brush or pen
- Brush application - Apply directly to rusted areas, ensuring the product is worked into pitted sections, corners, and edges.
- Needle-point pen - Insert the nib into the chip or scratch and gently squeeze to let the converter flow into the damaged area.
- Avoid spreading the converter onto surrounding paint. If any excess reaches painted surfaces, wipe it away with a clean cloth.
- The formula will begin reacting with rust and turn blue/black within 15 minutes. If no change is seen after an hour, reapply. Once dry, wait 2 hours before proceeding with primer.
- Shake to mix - Shake the primer pen for at least 60 seconds to ensure the formula is fully blended.
- Prepare the area - Make sure the surface is clean, dry, and free from dust, polish, or wax. If you've used the rust converter, ensure the area has cured for 2 hours before priming.
- Apply the primer - Use the built-in brush or needle-point tip to apply smooth, light coats. For precision, place the nib into the chip or scratch and squeeze gently to fill only the damaged area. Let each coat dry for up to 30 minutes. If no further coats are needed, allow it to cure for 1 hour before moving on to the paint stage.
- Mix and colour check - Shake the touch-up pen thoroughly for 3 minutes. Metallic paints may separate and require extra shaking. Test the colour in a hidden spot and let it dry for 10 minutes, as the wet paint may appear slightly different.
- Surface prep - Ensure the area is clean and dry, with no remaining polish, wax, or dirt.
- Paint application - Use the precision nib or brush to apply thin, even coats. If using the needle-point pen, insert it into the chip or scratch and gently squeeze. Avoid layering paint on top of partially dried coats to prevent colour variation. Let each coat dry for up to 30 minutes, and cure the final coat for 1 hour before applying lacquer.
- Shake to mix - Shake the lacquer pen well for at least 60 seconds before use.

How do I make a touch-up pen repair less visible?
Our touch-up pens are colour-matched to your vehicle using either your paint code or registration, helping you achieve a near-invisible finish on small chips and scratches. If your car’s paint has aged or faded over time, the new paint might look slightly more vivid – which is totally normal. To help the repair blend seamlessly, use a follow-up product like PaintNuts Scratch & Scuff Remover for a polished result.
Do I need to use both primer and lacquer?
Primer is only essential if the scratch or chip has gone all the way through to bare metal, especially if there’s any sign of rust. As for lacquer – it’s highly recommended in most cases, particularly for metallic finishes. Wait 24 hours after applying your colour coat, then use lacquer to seal, protect, and enhance the final finish.
Are pearlescent paints available as touch-up colours?
Yes, we can match almost all pearlescent paint finishes – around 99% of codes are covered. Pearlescent and metallic paints are common on newer models, but a few tri-coat colours can't be recreated in a single stage.
