How to use Smart touch-up paint? (FAQ)

Smart touch-up paint is simple and easy to use regardless of whether you use it as a touch-up paint pen, bottle and brush, or car spray paint. Follow the guidance below for the correct use of each.

How to use the Smart paint pen?

  1. Shake the Pen
Shake the pen thoroughly for at least 60 seconds. You can test your colour match in a discreet area and let it dry for 10 minutes — the paint often appears different in colour when it’s wet.

  2. Prepare the surface
Prepare the surface, ensuring the area is clean and dry. All wax, polish, and dust should be removed. If you are repairing a deep scratch or chip and can see metal/plastic, we recommend using the primer first. For areas where rust is present, we also recommend using a rust treatment prior to application.

  3. Apply the Car Paint
Allow the nib of the paint pen to sit in the scratch or chip and squeeze gently. Leave the paint to dry for 10–25 minutes before applying a second coat, if required. Leave the paint to cure for 24 hours until hardened before applying lacquer or polishing.

How to use Smart car spray paint?

  1. Shake the spray paint
Shake the Smart spray paint for at least 2 minutes. You can test your colour match in a discreet area, we recommend doing this before carrying out your repair.

  2. Prepare the surface
We advise smoothing the area first using wet and dry sand paper. The surface must be clean and dry, ensuring all wax, polish and dust is removed.

  3. Apply the spray paint
Apply the spray paint in smooth, cross-coats 250mm away from the repair. Let it dry for 15 minutes before a second coat, and wait 24 hours before applying lacquer. After use, turn the aerosol upside down to empty the nozzle valve to clean, then it can be reused at a later date.

Does Smart car touch up paint need a primer?

For deeper scratches on your Smart car, with exposed metal or plastic it is advisable to use a primer first, as it helps with adhesion and provides a smoother surface. For minor scratches that aren’t exposed you may be able to apply the car paint directly to the damaged area.
